Stock Market crash Story

New technology can be dangerous. I know it’s simple to say this but there are risks to investing that go beyond money. With the recent market crash, it reminded me about that.

Is it possible that my stock portfolio was unharmed?

While this isn’t an actual statistical analysis, I honestly believe my portfolio survived this crash. Part of it is that I am heavily invested in index mutual funds. They are a highly diversified portfolio of stocks that can sometimes pull you out of a crash and save you from losses. Also, I diversify my stocks by company. I still have the big companies but I also have some small companies. Like E-commerce company Shopify. It was the worst performing company in Canada but it’s a stock that has been growing from losses of US$0.04 dollars to US$40 dollars within the year. (that’s a 1,000% gain), and its losses are around a few cents, I can see my share was probably in the same area as other companies in the boom.

I am also diverse in age. I’m not the youngest of the kids my age and have seen first hand the effects of corporate spin-offs. I’ve seen that divorce mess between parents and children. Sometimes you don’t get to either parent. Both have to look to their next partner and children. I was raised by my great grandma so I can see clearly how parents tend to encourage children to look beyond their parents. Whenever I think of my mum, I think about how she was always supportive and helped me think about my future. The best part was always when she went for the car wash on the weekend. And this is true of her, it’s really admirable that she gave up her life as a working mother to raise a family of five.

I am also a man. I didn’t want to experience the same loss that my mum and her siblings went through so I sought the investment advice of a financial adviser. “If you don’t believe that you can beat the market, then don’t invest in it.” — the financial adviser I spoke to. I am certain that’s been the right move. You will know when it’s time to sell your stock or hold onto it but it’s the advisers and their decisions that help you get a better price. He’s been amazing. His opinion is more honest and honest than most other financial advisers. This is one reason I am thankful to be in a stock market crash.

The best part is that I’m able to sleep better at night.
